Vision
Any child in Greater Fort Lauderdale can read by the end of third grade
Mission
Ensure every child in Greater Fort Lauderdale has access to free, age appropriate books any time through book giveaways and the Little Free Library network
Reading is a critical bridge to success in school, work and life. Children generally are learning to read until third grade. By the fourth grade, they should be reading to learn. Students who don’t read well by the end of third grade have increasing difficulty to keep up and are four times as likely to drop out of high school.
Many children in disadvantaged neighborhoods are lagging behind because they do not have access to age appropriate reading materials. Our volunteer team at Action For Literacy wants to ensure that every child has access to free books close to their home.
Our passionate volunteers build, install, stock and maintain over 110 birdhouse-style Little Free Libraries in the neighborhoods where they are needed most.
It started with a simple question by a volunteer. Why can't we....? Within a week in October 2016 passionate volunteers collected over 500 gently used children's books and gave them away at two City sponsored events.
The rest is history.
Our core team of volunteers meets several times a month to organize upcoming events. They build our Little Free Libraries, create decorating events with local schools and civic and homeowners associations, restock our library network, collect thousands of books, and give them away at neighborhood events.
These events can only be successful with great partners and caring volunteers like you!
We have been blessed to collaborate with the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale, PNC Bank, Broward County Public Schools and Libraries, Early Learning Coalition and many business, church and non-profit entities over the years. We welcome businesses, churches, students, neighbors, friends and families to join our Action For Literacy volunteer team.
